Why should we insulate our homes?
Insulating our homes is the most effective way to save energy and money at home. In an average house around 35% of the heat lost through un-insulated walls and around 26% is lost through an uninsulated loft. Heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold one. In winter, when it is much colder outside the warm heat from your home escapes into the surrounding air outside. So, insulating your home will help you heat your home more efficiently due to less heat escaping and keeping warmth indoors - where you need it. By reducing the amount of energy used to heat your home you will be reducing your CO2 emissions, one of the biggest causes of climate change. You will also save money! How much money could i save on my energy bills?
Insulating an uninsulated loft and cavity walls could save you around £390* per year! Insulation is so cost effective it will pay for itself over and over again. Did you know?
If every household in the UK that is suitable for cavity wall insulation installed it, we could save around £690 million and 4 million tonnes of CO2 every year! Click on these links if you are unsure if your home is suitable for loft or cavity wall insulation
*Savings of £390 over a one year period are made up from increasing your loft insulation from 50mm (about 2inches) to between 250mm and 270 (about 10-11 inches) and installing cavity wall insulation. The cost saving is approximate, and is provided for illustrative purposes only, based on a 1940’s gas heated semi-detached house with three bedrooms. Savings assume a gas price of 3.73p/kWh using a 10 year old gas boiler. Your individual saving will vary according to the type and age of your home, the type and age of your boiler, the fuel used in your home and how you take advantage of the increased warmth following the installation of the insulation measures.
